This important and detailed study describes and analyses the main features of the economy and social structure of the Isles in the seventeenth century. In geographical scope it covers the Hebrides from Islay in the south to Lewis in the north, as well as the island groups of Orkney and Shetland.
While it is possible to trace some general tendencies and developments in the course of the seventeenth century, it is necessary to look closely and critically at the similarities and differences between the various island and archipelagos. The conditions on each are related to their individual histories and to physical factors such as terrain and the degree of remoteness from other land, particularly from the centres of population, trade and government.
One of the advantages of new technology is that it enables hard-to-find books to be made available again. We are pleased to present the first fruits of exploring John Donald’s classic backlist of academic titles. Not only do we hope to add more titles to the list but look forward to bringing in other titles suitable for this system as time goes on.
